This Week in Millbrook: Festivals, Free Concerts, and a City Council Meeting Worth Watching

From the Summer Kick-Off Festival at Riverside Park to a contentious city council vote on downtown zoning, here's everything happening in Millbrook June 3–9.

MILLBROOK, June 3 — It's a packed week in the city, with something for just about everyone on the calendar. Families will want to head to Riverside Park for the 12th Annual Summer Kick-Off Festival, running Friday through Sunday. The free event features live music on two stages, a local craft vendor market with more than 60 booths, carnival rides, and the always-popular Millbrook Chili Cook-Off (registration is still open for competitors — contact the Parks Department at (555) 300-4400). Headlining the Saturday night concert slot is the Millbrook Community Orchestra, performing an outdoor pops program that includes a tribute to Motown. Gates open at 10 a.m. each day.

Key Events at a Glance

  • Monday, June 3: Millbrook City Council regular session, City Hall Room 101, 7 p.m. — zoning variance vote on River District development on the agenda
  • Tuesday, June 4: Millbrook School Board budget hearing, Millbrook High School auditorium, 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 5: Free outdoor yoga, Clement Park, 7 a.m. (weather permitting)
  • Thursday, June 6: Millbrook Public Library author talk — novelist Sandra Beech discussing her new book "Blue Mile Road," 6:30 p.m., free admission
  • Friday–Sunday, June 7–9: 12th Annual Summer Kick-Off Festival, Riverside Park, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.

The one to circle on your calendar if you follow city politics: Monday night's council session. The River District zoning variance has been a flashpoint for months, with affordable housing advocates, the Millbrook Redevelopment Authority, and a coalition of neighboring business owners all showing up to state their cases. Council Member Vance has indicated she will move to table the vote pending an independent economic impact study, a motion that will likely draw opposition from the mayor's office. Meetings are open to the public, and public comment runs from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Come ready to listen — or speak.
