Streaming Wars Heat Up as Local Viewers Feel the Pinch of Rising Subscription Costs

With multiple major streaming platforms hiking prices again this quarter, Millbrook residents say they're rethinking their entertainment budgets and cutting services they once considered essential.

MILLBROOK, June 3 — Streaming television was supposed to be the affordable alternative to cable, but for many Millbrook households, the monthly bills are starting to look familiar. Following another round of price increases from several major platforms — including hikes of up to $3 per month on ad-free tiers — local viewers say they're doing the math and not always liking the answer. "I counted last month and I was paying for six different services," said Millbrook resident Gloria Pacheco, 41. "I sat down and actually cancelled three of them. It felt like I was finally breathing again."

A National Trend with Local Impact

Industry analysts say the era of cheap streaming is definitively over, with the average American household now spending more on streaming subscriptions than they did on cable packages just seven years ago. Locally, staff at Millbrook Electronics on Turnpike Road say they've noticed increased interest in antenna setups and over-the-air broadcast options — a trend owner Dale Speicher calls "a full circle moment." The shop sold more than 40 digital antennas last month, more than double its typical monthly figure. Meanwhile, the Millbrook Public Library has quietly expanded its digital lending library, which gives cardholders free access to a rotating catalog of films and documentaries through the Kanopy platform.

For those not ready to cut the cord entirely, local financial counselor Brigette Okoro recommends a simple audit: list every subscription, note when you last used it, and apply a 30-day rule. "If you haven't touched it in a month, you probably don't need it," Okoro said. "People are surprised how fast $8 here and $15 there adds up." The Millbrook Public Library's digital resources page is available at the library's website, and staff are available by phone to help cardholders get set up.
